Granite is about a 10 minute drive from Philipsburg, which is pretty cute in its own right. The road to the main area is passable for 2WD vehicles, as long as the car isn't super low to the ground. Some of the spur roads require high clearance 4WD, but you can walk to everything from the easy road.
Nit too many buildings but worth the detour
Granite was once a silver mining town that included, but was not limited to, 18 saloons. With all the silver rushing in, 1880's Montanans had it going on. Brothels, liquor, a union hall, and a school house were enjoyed by about 3,000 people. That all changed in 1893 when the price of silver plummeted, leaving only 140 people in town just a year later.
We did see a black bear down the road, fair warning
Fun place to visit. Not much left but some great RockWorks.
Its cool but not well maintained
My wife and I visited when there weren't many people around. We had fun reading the signs and looking at the historical places. Some of the signs were little deteriorated and could use some fixing, but overall the experience was really great. My wife wasn't expected to enjoy yourself as much as she did. There's a lot of history in this area.
Today, the ruins of Granite are eerily beautiful. The brick walls of many structures remain standing tall like the trees reaching up through their absent roofs. The town is pretty spread out and it's easy to lose track of your group if you split up. Everything is enter at your own risk. It isn't safe, but I don't care. I poke around in places I shouldn't and I will definitely die first in a horror movie.
